LEO SCALA, THE MASTER ARTISAN

Leo started out studying chemical engineering and playing classical music on the clarinet, but by the mid-1990s, his passions led him to rock 'n' roll, electric guitars, and Southern California. In a small workshop there, for the last 25 years, he’s been obsessively crafting extraordinary guitars that are collected and played by discerning artists such as Richard Fortus of Guns N’ Roses, Phil X of Bon Jovi, Doug Aldrich of Whitesnake, and Warren Cuccurullo.

LEO SCALA, THE MASTER ARTISAN

Leo started out studying chemical engineering and playing classical music on the clarinet, but by the mid-1990s, his passions led him to rock 'n' roll, electric guitars, and Southern California. In a small workshop there, for the last 25 years, he’s been obsessively crafting extraordinary guitars that are collected and played by discerning artists such as Richard Fortus of Guns N’ Roses, Phil X of Bon Jovi, Doug Aldrich of Whitesnake, and Warren Cuccurullo.

THE BEST-SOUNDING VINTAGE GIBSONS NEVER MADE

Every detail of each guitar is obsessively conceived, customized, and handmade. Working, in spirit, alongside the bold inventor who originally designed the Theodore™ in the 1950s, Scala tuned his focus to the materials and techniques of that period and began to tinker and iterate as though the now-iconic designs were brand new, and then subjected to seventy years of use and owner-installed modifications.

“When I build a guitar, I am not building a guitar,” says Scala. “I’m first building a knob. Then I’m winding the pickups. I’m 100% dialed into each and every one of those details. I build a whole lot of different little things. The guitar is just a place where everything comes together.”

Though his guitars have the visual impact of sculpture, the looks are never the most important thing to Scala. “It’s always the sound,” he says. “It can be extremely flashy, but if you pick it up and it doesn’t do its own thing, then you just missed the whole point. It’s not art that should be hanging on a wall; it’s a performing piece of art.”

THE '58 FLYING V's

In a career spanning three decades, Leo Scala has established an enviable reputation for his unique creativity and impeccable craftsmanship, and a passion for Gibson instruments. For this inaugural Master Artisan Collection release, Leo has partnered with the Gibson Custom Shop on ten Flying V style guitars. Each is individually unique in its appearance, aging, and details, but all feature solid Korina wood bodies and long neck tenon construction, Brazilian rosewood fretboards, custom-wound "Retrophonic" humbucker pickups, and painstaking detail and finish work. Each one is like no other instrument in existence and is designed to be enjoyed for a lifetime.

NEVER-BUILT CLASSICS

The Q27 Flying V™ represents a moment in time that Leo Scala artfully captured when his city (Los Angeles, California) was completely shut down and resembled an apocalyptic no-man’s-land. The ’52 DeVille SG™ takes its inspiration from multiple sources, and yet it remains unmistakably Gibson. It starts by imagining an alternate history, with a Gibson SG being released concurrently with the first Gibson Les Paul™, which was introduced in 1952. For the Theodore Retroliner, Leo started by imagining that the Theodore was actually released in 1957 or 1958, and like some other Gibson models, was subtly revised and changed over the years with different pickup configurations and custom colors and then subjected to the finish and playing wear that comes with the longtime use of a well-loved guitar.

THE CODE RED R9

Master Artisan Leo Scala delivers big-time on his vision for a vintage Gibson model that never was but should have been, bringing it to life with all of the imagination, intricate detail, and skill that are hallmarks of his work. The Code Red R9 Les Paul™ has a lightweight, one-piece mahogany body with a beautifully flamed two-piece maple cap. A significant difference between the Code Red R9 and other 1959 Les Pauls is how the strings are anchored at the other end with a wraparound bridge with pre-adjusted intonation points for exceptional sustain, vibration, and responsiveness. A removable steel trapeze tailpiece adds not only to the visual appeal but also contributes to the sustain and tone. This is one of the best-sounding Les Pauls that was never made - until now.
